Task 1

LECTURES

Week 1:
Introduced to what the module was all about. We were put into groups, or more like we chose ourselves who we wanted to work with. Our main theme for this entire semester is 'Purpose' and we had to research into a culture of our choice. The end goal is to come up with a design that embodies the theme and relates to the culture.

Week 2:
Consultation with Mr Vinod who was assigned to be our group's supervisor. We had some basic ideas in mind already but he helped us understand what our task actually was. It was a class consisting mostly of feedback and progress checking.

Week 3:
We presented our final proposal, or as final our proposal can be to Mr. Vinod who checked every other group's proposals as well for feedback. As for our group, he told us that the ideas were fine, but we needed to find the bridge between that and the purpose so it could be more impactful. He gave us examples such as an advertisement for bandaids with the image of Hulk using it which promotes the flexibility of the bandaid. As well as telling us about an ad for pets where a large video of a dog itching itself on the lowest floor of an atrium where people walked all over to make them appear as fleas. These are the types of ideas we should strive for.

Week 4:
In our lecture session, we were briefed upon what we needed to do for our Project 2 which is to do some research and analysis. For our sessions with Mr. Vinod, there were no classes held since it was Chinese New Year.

Week 5:
Mr. Ashrizal gave us information about our final project, so the lecture class was rather short. We had a small session with Mr. Vinod afterwards as he gave us feedback to do with our research and what we needed to add on to our slides.

Week 6:
No lecture classes, however meetings with Mr. Vinod continued and we furher discussed about ideas for our final project. In our group, we began coming up with various phone case designs with typography integrated in hopes it would represent our purpose.

Week 7:
No lecture classes, but meetings with Mr. Vinod continued to check on our progress and ideas.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 1: Research Proposal

For our first task, we had to compile all our research and ideas into slides to present to Mr Vinod. Our group came to the agreement to look into the culture of rock and roll, specifically from the 70s to 80s.

Initially we struggled with coming up with ideas, but after having some group meetings we managed to solidify them further. I was tasked to write a rationale surrounding sound and lyrics of rock and roll.

Afterwards, I was tasked to expand on my own idea which was to make temporary tattoos based on rock and roll symbolism.

We then decided to finalize our ideas and since I came up with the tattoo one, I had to rewrite our rationale for it and condense it so it would only answer important questions.

Finally, we recorded our presentation together on Zoom after making final edits to the proposal.

Project 2 Research

For the research questions, I offered the following to the group:
  1. How often do you change up your phone case?
  2. Would you consider purchasing a case with album art of your favorite band on it?
  3. Do you feel that there are enough phone cases available for your phone type?
  4. Do you prefer simple cases or more detailed designs?
Lene, our group leader, decided to use my first and fourth question for the survey we were going to conduct.

As for the slides, I helped in writing out the visual analyses for two album cover styles.

Since I am currently not residing in Malaysia, another group member of ours took up the job to find possible places to print our designs onto phone cases. We were on a tight deadline so our initial plans of printing it on to hard cover cases couldn't happen, so we stuck with stickers that we could place onto transparent cases.

Feedback:

Week 4:
Mr Vinod states that our proposal shows good understanding of research methods and is resourceful. Our ideas and brainstorming are consistent throughout and our communication is effective, clearly justifying the theme with supported citations.
