LECTURES
Week 1: Introduction to the module. We were then given the PDF to the assignment brief and tracker which allows us to review what assignments will be given each week and what we need in order to achieve it. Moving on from that we were given our first task which was to create a character out of a set of given shapes with rules that we have to follow.
Week 2: The teacher asked us what our favorite characters were. This was to introduce us to the basics of character design, which were explained to have quite a few factors that go into the creation of interesting and fun characters. Some of those factors include colors and shapes, for example rounded characters tend to be good and happy whilst sharper edges could mean evil and anger.
Week 3: We learned more about composition and backgrounds in this lecture. There are several ways to frame a composition to create a more alluring scene, or to make a character pop out more. We were taught about foregrounds and backgrounds and how they work to create a composition.
Week 4: There was no class this week!

Task 1: Exercises
As mentioned in the lecture section, we were tasked to create a new unique character from a limited set of shapes. We have to sketch out concepts first before recreating the final design in Adobe Illustrator. There are some rules we have to follow as well to make it more challenging, which were to use only the shapes that they have provided for us. We aren't allowed to distort or transform it either, it has to be in its original form. Resizing is okay though!

Figure 1.1 First set of concept sketches
I decided to use pokemon as inspiration for my concepts, since I love the franchise and the designs of all the individual monsters in that world. I personally struggle with designing non-human characters so this will help inspire me a lot more. They are all very simple to start off with since I didn't know how to create something more complex at the start and I wanted to avoid overwhelming myself. The bottom right design was actually heavily inspired by the pokemon 'Wooper', which was mostly done for fun!

Figure 1.3 First attempts at drawing the character
Working Illustrator for the first time was certainly a challenge but I managed to get the hang of it. I decided to use the bottom left sketch to base this monster off of since I thought it resembled a rabbit and it was cute!

Figure 1.6 Final color palette and design
This is my final design of my original character using the shapes that they have provided. I decided to go for a cool and icy color palette since I had the idea of naming this creature 'Frosbun'. I improved the very original sketch by adding more shapes to develop it further and make the design more eye-catching, as well as using very vibrant colors.
Figure 1.3 concepts for the background
Our next task was to create a background for the character that we have created so we may put it all together for the final card game template. I sketched out four possible backgrounds and attempted to include foregrounds and the distant background to make it much more visually appealing.
Figure 1.8 Original concept
At first, I wasn't entirely sure of what environment I wanted my creature to be in since I hadn't fully fleshed out the design before. Once I did, I knew what to do next and that was to put it in a snowy landscape which matches the whole theme behind the monster.
