LECTURES

Week 10: During this lecture we were reminded of what our 2nd project was about, watching the video that Mr Charles left us. Afterwards we looked at some classmates work for some feedback, discussing about it in general as well.

Week 10: Sense of Place

It took me a while to come up with an idea that I could use for this project. The theme I want to incorporate into it is loneliness and the feeling of missing home, despite already having a new home in a new place. As the saying goes, 'a home away from home', yet still feeling disconnected to it.

Figure 1.0 Paintings depicting loneliness by Edward Hopper

This artist does a great job at portraying the sense of loneliness and isolation, the colors aren't bright and vibrant but rather muted. It adds to the overall mood that I hope to achieve with my final work. The fact that the people aren't facing the viewer but rather staring off into the distance gives off a daydream-like feel to it too, as if their minds are full of thoughts.

Figure 1.1 More paintings by Edward Hopper

I took a picture of my room which is going to be the setting that I'd like to use for this project. It seemed like the right environment to evoke the feeling of loneliness since it's the one room I spend the most time in.
Figure 1.2 My messy room

Like any young adult's room, mine is quite a mess. That's fine however since it's a good reflection of who I am. It might also be good to keep it that way for the final piece, to show items thrown about as if the person living there was struggling with something.

It was also difficult to actually get a better angle of my bed and door, which I wanted to include to add some lighting going in from said door. This was the best I could do since my room is not the biggest either.

Figure 1.3 Initial sketching

Of course getting all the perspective and proportions correct was going to be a challenge but I think the first attempt didn't go too badly. I want to add some bold lighting into this piece so I will try experimenting with that next.

Figure 1.4 More sketching done

With the added lighting, it creates a whole different mood to the piece which was what I was after. I then had the idea of adding a figure of myself there, perhaps curled up on the bed to further push the idea of loneliness. It would be illuminated by the light which i think would look cool.

Figure 1.5 Progress

I am starting to have second thoughts about adding myself, but it really does add to how isolated this entire piece feels, so I'll stick with it till the end.

Figure 1.6 More progress

I decided to darken the colors even more and then continued to shade the piece. I wanted it to be so muted and dull that it's just sad to look at.

Figure 1.7

I wanted to see what it would look like cropped, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it... I even added black borders on the top and bottom to make it seem like a scene from a movie.
