Final Project: Visual Analysis

What is a visual analysis? It addresses an artwork's visual attributes such as color, line, texture, and size. It may also include historical context or interpretations of meaning.

For our final project, the first part of our task was to conduct a visual analysis on a piece of artwork that we liked in 500 words. It can be from any artist that we draw inspiration from, and I'm sure ones who do many different mediums too. It took me a while to decide which artist I'd like to analyse art from but decided on a digital artist that goes by the name 'Anushbanush' on social media.

Figure 1.1 Artwork from Anush's tumblr blog

The reason why I decided to choose a digital artist, and this person specifically, was because I'm a digital artist myself and I wanted to pick an artwork that had all the elements that I personally love when I come across art online. It has to have a bright, saturated color palette that harmonizes with each other and fun dynamic posing for the characters drawn. The background has to be fitting for said character as well and unify with it to create a stunning piece overall.

Figure 1.2 'Storefront' by Anush

This particular piece of work will be the one I will analyse. From what I can see, there is a character standing in front of a convenience store in an unknown place. It is hinted to be in Japan thanks to the maneki neko statue sat right on top of it, which is an iconic figure that's well known there. Other than that, other clues that lead me to it is the spelling of 'combini' which in actuality is supposed to be the word 'conbini', meaning convenience in Japanese. The artist's reasoning for such spelling is because it's an inside joke between friends.

The contrast between the inside of the store and outside is very clear with the color choices the artist made. She chose red and blue which are complimentary colors that would work well in any piece of art. She demonstrated it beautifully in this piece with how strong the shades of red are inside the store compared to the less saturated blues outside. The sign of the store is also done in red which helps build that contrast more. This color palette is repeated throughout the entire piece in different shades which adds an overall harmonious feeling to it, making it pleasing to the eye when viewers look at it. Even the character stands out from the background despite the similar color scheme. I can also see the artist using everyday symbols in their work such as the wi-fi signal and no smoking sign, a sight we are all familiar with. It adds to the casual life type of feel with this piece, as if we are there ourselves to enjoy a snack from a convenience store, waiting outside for our friends. The little details of the posters and graffiti near the character adds more life to it as well, really solidifying the everyday life vibe happening.

What I can interpret from this work is simply a moment captured of everyday life as I have stated before. Sure, the exact setting may not actually exist, but the idea is still there of a person hanging around a convenience store during the afternoon. It's something we can all relate to and understand without there being a deeper meaning behind it. Sometimes, a piece of art is created just because, and the artist may have just done so for this piece. The composition is unbalanced, since it is from a perspective that makes the buildings unaligned and not directly from the front. It gives an interesting weight to the left which has the smaller building compared to the right where it's entirely covering that side. There is space on the left to give room to breathe.

Final Project

A random idea came to mind about what I wanted to draw. I wanted to do an illustration that was set in nature, a difference to the convenience store the artist had. It would be a place that isn't man-made. I wanted to do something different. This would be my response - to respond to this artist by using the same techniques but translating it in my own way.

The idea of lily pads and frogs were the first things I thought about, since I really liked frogs just as much as I liked cats. It would be interesting to attempt using a minimal color palette like the artist but instead of red and blues it would be blue and greens this time.

I think it would be nice to also have a splash of bright colors which would be the lotus flowers.

Figure 1.4 initial concepts

I decided to quickly do a mock-up of what kind of composition I wanted, so I put down colors really sloppily to get a basic idea at first of what I want. The greyish circles are meant to be stepping stones that are laid atop of a pond or river, surrounded by lily pads. I have not yet added the flowers but will do once I get the composition down.

Figure 1.5 More sketching and ideas

I thought about adding a character like the artist did, but I'll have to experiment more with everything else before doing so. Once I had this done, I wasn't entirely satisfied, so I thought about the composition more and came up with a different idea which was to have it in a landscape orientation and have the character submerged in the water this time surrounded by a ton of foliage and flowers. I wanted to make it as cluttered as possible just like how detailed the artist makes their work, but not with objects and items, but natural plants.

Some feedback from Dr Charles was that I should add more things onto it which is exactly what I was thinking.

Figure 1.6 Second concept

I like this composition a lot more, and I got better at choosing colors as well. I have to admit I did use a few color palettes I found online to help, because choosing colors on my own is rather difficult. I really wanted to make it as harmonious as how Anush does it.

After this sketch I asked my friends for some feedback on how to make this more better and full of detail, as cluttered as I can possibly make it without it being too much. I implemented their suggestions which were to add the lily pads (that I forgotten), butterflies and reeds.

Figure 1.7 Further improvements to the concept

It was starting to come together better at this stage and more what I envisioned it as, so I was happy. Now the hard part was to clean it up and properly color everything.

I used these color palettes as a reference.

The aim of my final piece is to create an artwork that was as visually beautiful as Anush's, I wanted to use the same color choices as her and make a busy composition with lots to look at. However, instead of drawing buildings and shops, I decided to go the opposite direction with nature and landscapes. I wanted to see how busy I could fill the page just as the artist does with hers but with flowers and plants. I wanted to have a limited color scheme as well, mirroring what Anush does with her colors. It was certainly a challenge to keep to a few shades of blue and green, but it turned out alright in the end. I then decided to add a pop of color but limited the choices of that as well, only using yellows, oranges and reds to contrast against the foliage. The one thing Anush did not have is strong lighting in her work which I ended up incorporating into my piece to really push the idea of this scene occurring outside in the sunlight. It created a very warm atmosphere surrounding the character who is submerged in water, inducing a nice and happy feeling to the viewers. Calm.

Reflection for the week

This entire project was stressful at first because I genuinely had no idea what I wanted to do for my final artwork. After considering a lot of artists I finally settled on one that I'm happy with. It was certainly a journey trying to figure out what composition I wanted to use as well but I'm so very happy with my what I managed to produce as my final. It took around two days to complete the piece but those hours spent not sleeping were worth it for this course.

Final Reflection for the semester

This whole semester was a rollercoaster of emotions, mostly caused by other classes and not Design Principles though. This particular module was like coming back home after a long, hard day at work and you could sit back and relax with your loved ones. I never had a negative experience with this class and the teacher, Dr Charles, is one of the best lecturers I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. He allowed us to be as free and creative as we wanted with our work and never told us that what we were doing was wrong. He always encouraged us to do what we wanted and to use different mediums which was nice, since I know most people like me have their own medium they are comfortable with using the most. It was very rewarding to get out of my comfort zone by doing different things for some of the tasks, even if I did end up going back to my preferred medium being digital art.

It was also very beneficial of me to actually learn the principles of design which I have never really thought about so deeply before. It really helps you to think about your artwork more critically and to improve it if there was a need to. I also enjoyed hearing the feedback given to my classmates since that helps me out too even if it's not directed at my own work. It felt really nice to be able to talk about our work without it feeling awkward, I felt comfortable chatting to my classmates and teacher compared to other modules where I feel more shy. All in all, this module was super fun to be in and I'll definitely miss our class dearly.
