LECTURES

Week 10: We went through different transitions that appear in webcomics as well as understanding how the flow of story goes to the next. Then there was a small feedback session for those who had basic ideas on what sort of stories they wanted to tell.

Weeks 11-14 were all independent learning, as we all had to work on our comics.

Project 2: Webtoon & Motion Comic

For my story idea, I wanted to do something about a black cat.

Figure 1.0 First concept sketches

As I sketched away, the ideas started flowing into my head. The cat was going to be hurt, but then I thought hey, what if a heroine came in to save the poor thing? So that's what I added in between the panels.

Figure 1.1 More sketches. introducing new character

This heroine intervened and managed to save the cat. But then what comes next, you may ask? Well, more ideas started to develop once I started to clean up the sketches digitally.

Figure 1.2 First digitalization

For now, I decided to keep it monochrome so I could add the proper colours later. Or who knows, maybe I'll keep it this way to save time. I got the idea of making the guy a recurring character in the story rather than someone who showed up once at the start then never again.

I then got inspired by magical girl anime, namely Sailor Moon who also featured a black cat named Luna.

I thought it would be fun to introduce this concept to the story, so I would make the black act as the mentor or companion for a magical girl. At first, I was going to make the girl the chosen magical girl, but then I had better ideas down the line.

At this point I figured I should probably draw out the characters themselves and finalize their designs before continuing on making the panels. Then it'd be easier to keep consistent as I draw them again and again.

Figure 1.4 Concepts

Here is the design I decided to use for the first character. I ended up keeping the hairstyle that I first drew him with, it was simple enough and I liked it. It would be easier on me to draw later too.

Figure 1.5 Second panel sketching

Here's the second page which still isn't finished, but it's where I decided to insert the second character who was going to be the heroine. The viewers may think she'll become the magical girl but I thought it'd be funny and interesting to make the boy a magical girl instead.

Figure 1.6 Finalizing the 2nd panel

I thought it was time to flesh out the girl now too.

Figure 1.7 Concepts for female mc

She is 2 years younger than the male lead and is in high school. I realized I drew the wrong uniform in the panel she was in so I'll return to that later to edit it.

Figure 1.8 Progress shots

Here is a compilation of all my sketches for the rest of the panels as I continue to work on them. On the left side are windows full of references if I happen to forget what the characters look like, or other thing such as the cat who is part of the main cast.

As I continued to work on this I realize I should design the magical girl outfit for the guy main character, so I quickly googled some outfits for inspiration.

Figure 1.9 Magical girls from various anime

These were the main protagonists that I decided to use as inspiration. I mostly based the outfit off of Sailor Moon (the girl in the middle) however, since I liked the simplicity of her dress.

Figure 2.0 Rough sketch of the outfit

This will be then used as my reference for the page when he transforms into a magical girl.

Final Webcomic

After many hours of work poured into this, I finally completed the webcomic.
