Task 1

LECTURES

Week 1: Introduction to the concept of world creation, especially the creation of brand new characters to fit a certain world. All of us had to think of a universe for our potential character to reside in and gather moodboards and pictures for it.

Week 2: Similarly to week 1, we continued with the concept of world creation. All of us shared what universes we picked as well as ideas for our character.

Week 3: For this week we began learning about character silhouette sketches, as well as turnaround sketches for our character.

Week 4: Beginning the turnaround sketches for our character and how to go about it. Understanding the right anatomy for our character to know what shapes to give them.

Week 5: Ms Noranis taught us to make quick sketches of a variety of poses, showing us a website that allows us to do so within a certain time limit so we don't get too caught up on details.

Week 6: Further pose explorations, as well as thinking about different expressions for our character.

Week 7: Now we are moving on to designing different character outfits that are not the usual style of our character.

Week 8: Independent learning week.

Week 9: No class, but a continuation of compiling our work for Task 2. We also had individual sessions with Ms. Noranis.

Week 10: We now move on to creating a hero pose for our character, or a villain depending on the role of our character. This is where we let our skills shine through in lighting, shading and colour theory.

From week 11 onwards, we continued finalizing our hero poses and compiling all our work into one easy to flip through slides.

Figure 1.1 Compilation of my ideas

For the first task of concept world building, I knew I wanted my character to belong in a franchise or media that I really enjoyed. So that is why I chose the universe of Pokemon, specifically in the Alola region. I had very few ideas to start but eventually, I came up with the concept of a younger sister to an existing character in the universe who was part of the bad guy group.

These were the initial ideas for how she would have looked like.

Figure 1.5 Final design chosen

Once I finalized the design, it was time to draw out the turnaround sheet. This part was tricky because I have never done a sheet like this for any character I've created, which was a good experience for me.

After creating the turnaround sheet, I moved on to the rest of the assigned tasks such as sketching out different outfits as well as expressions. All of this is then compiled into one slideshow where the final hero pose is also included.
